Blog Post - Iris Kim

There’s a time in the evening. When the sun has gone down but it’s still light out, and you can see the sky darkening as you watch. When your shadow is blue and the air is soft and sweet. When the day is over but there’s still time left. When you have permission to relax, to not be doing anything. It’s a time when the whole world stops for a moment, takes the time to breathe, to allow you to catch up.

You are content. All the movement of the day settles down, and there is peace.

  1. This piece has great rhythm, I can almost hear it spoken. My favorite line is "when the day is over but there's still time left" because it's such a contradiction but also makes perfect sense. I also love the image of a blue shadow.

  4. Blue shadows: fading;
    where the sun sleeps, cloud's pillows
    beckon night's slumber

    A haiku poem response to a lovely post, Iris.

  5. I really love the feeling of curious solitude that this evokes. It makes me think of times when I've been in a place that is usually thrumming with life, like a mall or an airport, or the Liberty Bell lobby for that matter, when I'm the only one there. This prose feels familiar and comfortable, and uncomfortable and unusual all at once.

  6. I can imagine this exact moment. This piece also reminds me of how I feel sitting on the beach watching the little bit of last light touch the water. So powerful.

  8. Hi Iris;
    As I read your piece it reminds me of one of my favorite times of the day When dusk arrives and the light is fading in the Sky. I love the line were you write"When you have permission to relax, to not be doing anything" I appreciate how you remind the reader to take time from our busy lives to enjoy the world around us.

  10. Iris,
    Your words enhanced the spiritual nature of my early morning reaching back to embrace the evening's peace. As I reread your comforting words I was immediately drawn to "Spiritual State" by Nujabes featuring Uyama Hiroto as a musical companion to my reverie.Thank you for another way to enjoy the wholeness of the day!

    This piece really captures a moment. Those small moments where we stop (and where the world seems to pause with us) are really some of the best moments. It's the job of writers to capture those small ineffable moments and attempt to render them in language that readers can connect with. Great job!

  12. I just read the comments. Everyone appears to have their special place for the end of the day moment. Mine is sitting in the backyard as the sun goes down. The sky puts on a different show each night with shades of blue, pink and orange. The darkness comes slowly and tints the yard so that I am unaware of the end of the daylight. Such beauty around us if we take the time to enjoy. Thanks for the wake up call.
