Dreams

How can I reach them?
How can I touch them?
Could they really be unattainable?
Maybe
But it can’t hurt to it least strive for them?
Or can it?
Do I want to put myself through heartbreak if I can’t quite reach them?
No
I can’t think like that
Every dream has to be somewhat attainable
Right?
If they’re not, then what’s the point of dreaming
I want to take my life into my own hands
I want to make my dreams happen
I owe it to myself
Chasing is the last thing I want to do
Instead of chasing my dreams, I want to capture them
I want to really live
Live every day as if I know tomorrow is my last
But what if tomorrow is my last?
And I don’t get to dream another dream

  1. The stream of consciousness style of this poem really packs a punch. My favorite line is "Instead of chasing my dreams, I want to capture them" because it bursts with determination. In a poem full of uncertainty and half-answered questions, that line stands out because it's full of clarity and certainty. Very powerful.

  2. Hi Emily;
I think that your piece has challenged all of us to be much more bold and daring in the pursuit of our passions and goals. I especially liked the line where you declare::"Instead of chasing my Dreams. Iwant to capture them." I thought that your ending was very sobering. " But what if tomorrow is the Last? I just want to encourage you to as you say ",capture your dreams".

  3. Go girl! You capture those dreams. Sure some won't be all that you expect, but some will. That is the point of life.....to live. Live for today sounds good but also live for the future. There is joy in the now and also in the yet to come. Keep your mind and heart open. MY favorite line, "I want to really live"

  4. Such powerful thoughts as you ask and answer your own questions. At times we all wonder if we will reach our goals or live another day. Go for it - capture your dreams!

  5. I think this taps into a very universal idea about dreams - by choosing one, you're rejecting others.

  6. Emily,
Your piece raises a profound question. Should we have dreams if we will experience heartache when we don't achieve them? I suspect that dreams help keep us going in life, even if some seem next to impossible to achieve.

  7. Wow..this is a powerful poem! It resonates with dreams we all have in living a better life. Frederick Douglas (one of the most powerful leaders of the anti-slavery movement had a powerful quote related to attainable dreams. He said “If there is no struggle, there is no progress!” those who profess freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” I truly believe that “Anything is Possible” when you dream big and work hard towards attaining your goals.
