Pantoum Poems, Continued

For your reading pleasure, here are some more Pantoum Poems written by our amazing Project Write students this week.

Jasper Hinchman

This vulnerable relic of revolution
One of the greatest monuments I’ve ever scene
Ring that loud hallowed bell, ring it till the slave be free
What a sad day to desiccate a memorial of the unknown

One of the greatest monuments I’ve ever scene
In Penn’s city, calm and grave hangs the bell which rings no more
What a sad day to desiccate a memorial of the unknown
The history of America, both that cause pride and grief

In Penn’s city, calm and grave hangs the bell which rings no more
What purpose is there in defacing history
The history of America, both that cause pride and grief
Best of luck to the park services

What purpose is there in defacing history
Ring that loud hallowed bell, ring it till the slave be free
Best of luck to the park services
This vulnerable relic of revolution
Anna O'Neill-Dietel
Creation of democracy… completion of democracy
A ruined relic, a useful symbol
This sacred monument to our soldiers
Where is the lesson for our children

A ruined relic, a useful symbol
Makes me sad beyond words
Where is the lesson for our children
Adopt the principals proclaimed by yourselves, … and by the old bell in Independence hall

Makes me sad beyond words
It’s unknown
Adopt the principals proclaimed by yourselves, … and by the old bell in Independence hall
Work will continue this week

It’s unknown
This sacred monument to our soldiers
Work will continue this week
Creation of democracy… completion of democracy

  1. Jasper- In your Pantoum Poem I enjoyed reading in particular the line which reads:" , The History of America, both that cause pride and grief", along with the question: "What purpose is there in defacing History?, because it challenges us to want to know the complete story of America both positive and controversial. Anna- I was moved by your Pantoum Poem in particular I was inspired by the sentence which reads: "Creation of Democracy....Completion of Democracy as well as the sentence which reads :"Adopt the principles proclaimed by yourselves... and by the Old bell in Independence hall. Great Work.

  2. Anna, I find the end of your poem so powerful because the line “work will continue this week” feels so bureaucratic but that’s what makes it so interesting when paired with “Creation of democracy… completion of democracy.” It makes the point that the work of democracy is ongoing, but it’s also kind of funny because it treats this huge thing as simply being mundane. The beginning is also clever in how it uses contrast: creation/completion, ruined/useful.

  3. I love how you take a sad moment in life and expand on the situation.
