Texting Barrage

Project Write students came together for the first time this summer at orientation yesterday. Given a list of topics, they composed "text messages" on post-it notes, which were then displayed on chart paper. Students then conducted a gallery walk where they read every one's texts and took notes on things they noticed and wondered. Afterward, some students shared their notes with the whole group and conversation about the texts ensued.

Text to a fictional character:

Text to your future self:

Text to your parents when they were your age:

Texting is often viewed as a method of communication and an outlet for creative writing. If you could send a "text" to the above recipients, would you? What would you say?

  1. I really enjoyed reading these, especially the text to Boo Radley. If I was texting a character in To Kill a Mockingbird, I would choose Atticus Finch. I would tell him that he's an inspiration for who we all can be.

  2. It looks like a cool activity! I would send a text to the kid on the pink post-it, "You would learn something from the mistakes! Don't be afraid of making a mistake:)" I am looking forward to the next posting!

  3. My favorite on this page would be "not to judge people who are different from us." Get rid of the US in your life. We all are part of many groups, many US. I am a woman that is an US. I am old, almost 80 that is another US. We are all different and we should marvel at the differences in all of us. Oh I did not forget skin color, but when you get old and wise you become color blind to skin color. I care who you are and how you treat other people.

  4. All of the texts were great. I enjoyed the text to Boo Radley because To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books. I think it is as relevant today as it ever was. I wonder what Atticus, Jem, Dill, Scout, Tom or Boo would text to us.
