Pantoum Poem by Helen He
Look! It's the capital city
The society of little gardens
Philadelphia thrived
Anyways, she rescues the dogs
The society of little gardens
Honoring Earth’s green world of trees
Anyways, she rescues the dogs
He keeps a vigil at the tomb
Honoring Earth’s green world of trees
Sufferings and successes
He keeps a vigil at the tomb
Freedom is a light for which many men have died in darkness
Sufferings and successes
Philadelphia thrived
Freedom is a light for which many men have died in darkness
Look! It’s the capital city

ReplyDeleteencapsulates the Story of Washington Square.
Wow, I love how you play with themes of life and death. On the one hand, there's the imagery of lush greenery, nurturing dogs, and Philadelphia thriving. On the other, there's reference to vigils, tombs, and dying in darkness. Both are encapsulated in the capital city--which only makes me love Philadelphia more!
ReplyDeleteThe line “Anyways she rescues the dog,” really pulls you back to present day in comparison to the historical, more formal language used elsewhere. It’s perfectly placed. Same goes for the capital city line.
